A Guide to Relocating to Dublin

Interdean provides detailed destination guides for everyone that it relocates to Dublin, but in the meantime here is a brief overview to give you an idea of what you can expect from Dublin and some practical information.

Immigration
Interdean offers immigration advice to ensure that you and your partner have the necessary permits to live and work in Ireland. Interdean offers assistance with securing all the right documentation prior to you arriving.

Relocating to Dublin outside EU
All non-EU nationals need work permits to take up paid employment within Ireland. You cannot obtain this yourself but employers must make the application before you arrive in Ireland. However you do not require a work permit if you have a historic entitlement to Irish or any other EU citizenship.

Citizens of the US will not need a visa to enter Ireland. However, unless you’re claiming dual Irish nationality, all non-EU citizens planning to stay in Ireland for longer than three months need to register with the authorities. You must obtain what is known as “Permission to Remain.” This can be done by calling on your local police office in the district where you’re living. “Permission to Remain” is affixed by way of a stamp in your passport. You will also be issued a residency document. There is no fee for registering. You need to supply the following documentation with your application for Permission to Remain:
• A valid passport
• evidence (bank statements) that you have sufficient funds with which to support yourself and any dependents
• Any information requested in connection with the purpose of your being in the state

Relocating to Dublin Familiarisation

As part of a relocation, your Interdean guide will provide a personalised introduction to the region and your neighbourhood as part of an orientation tour – also known as a familarisation tour.

Dublin is considered by many as the social centre of Ireland. The area around St. Stephen’s Green, especially Harcourt Street, Camden Street, Wexford Street and Leeson Street, has some of the most popular places to eat out and drink in Dublin.

Dublin Shopping2 Moving to DublinShopping

Dublin city centre offers a good mix of shopping centres and high street shops, including the Ilac Shopping Centre, Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, Jervis Shopping Centre, Grafton Street and Henry Street. Grafton Street shops include Brown Thomas which has designer boutiques such as Hermès, Tiffany’s, Chanel and Louis Vuitton. The city is the location of large department stores, such as Clerys on O’Connell Street, Arnotts on Henry Street, Brown Thomas on Grafton Street and Debenham’s on Henry Street. Grafton Street is nearly as renowned for its buskers and street-performers as for its fine shopping.

Since the mid 1990s, suburban Dublin has seen the completion of several modern retail centres. These include Dundrum Town Centre, the largest commercial centre in Europe (on the Luas Green Line), Blanchardstown Centre, The Square, which has recently undergone a major refurbishment, in Tallaght (on the Luas Red Line), Liffey Valley Shopping Centre in Clondalkin, Northside Shopping Centre in Coolock, and Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords.

Lively Markets
Dublin has a plethora of local farmers’ markets offering a great deal of locally sourced organic produce. Whilst the Dublin Food Co-op, located in The Liberties area, is home to many market and community events.

Restaurants
Recommended Restaurant is Tiger Bec’s on Dawson Street in the city-centre. This is an excellent restaurant with great food and great service.

La Gondola is a lovely little restaurant located in Temple Bar, and facing onto the quays. It is a small restaurant, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm.

Irish Dancers Moving to DublinCulture
The Temple Bar was developed as Dublin’s cultural quarter, with regular arts productions, photographic and artists’ studios, and in the form of street performers and intimate small music venues.

Live Music
It is difficult to avoid the regular references to the internationally famed mega pop/rock group U2 and Dublin has been a place that has a history of nurturing musical talent. There are plenty of opprtunities to enjoy live music and see possible future big bands playing at the various venues around Dublin such as Whelan’s on Wexford Street and The Twisted Pepper on Middle Abbey Street which also offers a great place for coffee during the day.

Film
The two best known cinemas in the city centre are the Savoy Cinema and the Cineworld Cinema, both north of the Liffey. Alternative and special-interest cinema can be found in the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar, in the Screen Cinema on d’Olier Street and in the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield. Across suburban Dublin are located large modern multiscreen cinemas. Situated on the Liffey at the Eastlink tollbridge, The O2, has played host to many world renowned performers.

Dublin’s Cultural Quarter
Located in the heart of Dublin’s City Centre, some of Dublin’s best night spots, restaurants and unusual shops line these narrow, cobbled streets running between the Bank of Ireland and Christ Church Cathedral.

Relocating to Dublin Finding A Home

Interdean has experienced local area property experts. We offer full home finding assistance in the Dublin region to help you select the best home in the right neighbourhood at the right price.

Dublin Schooling Systems
By law any child in Dublin can attend public school despite their parent’s visa status. Even if the expat parents are newly arrived, no registration is needed before the student can attend school. However, when a school has reached its capacity no more students are admitted for the year and then a waiting list system is set up. A number of variables such as age and siblings in the same school can fast track a wait listed student to an available spot even before the wait list has been compiled.

If no place becomes available the student is relegated to other public schools farther away, which can end up being quite far from their house. Some expats parents need to try several schools before finding one with space. This is particularly difficult for students that arrive after the school year has begun after all the available spots are taken. It is advisable to try to contact the public school before arrival if you know the Dublin area in which you intend to live.

American School Dublin1 Moving to DublinInternational Schools
Expatriate communities living in Dublin are interested in international schools. These offer a range of qualifications like International Baccalaureate or American SAT. It’s interesting to consider this type of school for your children, especially if you intend to go back to your own country or you a thinking about moving to different countries in the near future.
